The lower school director of academics assists the lower school principal in fulfilling his/her major responsibilities as chief administrative officer and educational leader of the lower school. The director participates in the planning, organizing, and administering of assigned operational activities and educational programs.

Responsibilities

Instructional Management

  • Participate in the development and evaluation of educational programs.
  • Encourage and support development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  • Promote the appropriate use of technology in instruction/learning processes
  • Review, maintain, evaluate, and develop curriculum in partnership with lead teachers and the principal.
  • Research and communicate professional development opportunities for faculty.
  • Assist faculty in development of individual professional development and monitor progress.

School/Organizational climate

  • Promote a positive, caring climate for learning.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff.

School/Organizational Improvement

  • Participate in the development of school improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.
  • Help the principal develop, maintain, and use information systems and records to track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.
  • Work with the principal to create schedules, procedures, and routines.

Personnel Management

  • Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences as directed by the principal.
  • Assist the principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.

Administration and Facilities Management

  • Supervise operations in the principal’s absence.
  • Serve as the campus administrator on a rotating schedule with other lower school administrators.
  • Oversee DSS policy implementation for Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 programs.
  • Maintain communication with the principal relating to problems, concerns, activities, and achievements of students and staff.
  • Organize, schedule, and manage standardized testing, and interpret testing data.
  • Prepare a wide variety of reports and presentations.
  • Serve as an active member of the school administrative team.
  • Work with the principal to compile annual budget requests based on documented program needs.
  • Requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment; check inventory; maintain records.
  • Assist with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities.
  • Comply with federal/state laws and board policy.

Student Management

  • Help to develop a student discipline management system that results in positive student behavior.
  • Ensure that school policies are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  • Conduct conferences on student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.

Professional Growth and Development

  • Participate in professional development to improve skills related to job assignments
  • Attend national conferences as directed by the principal

School/Community Relations

  • Articulate the school’s mission to the Ben Lippen family and the community at large, and solicit support from families in realizing the mission.
  • Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage parent involvement.
