Position Overview:

The School Counselor at Christian Heritage School will play a crucial role in fostering the academic, emotional, and social well-being of lower school students. This individual will provide support through individual counseling, group guidance, and collaboration with teachers, parents, and administrators to ensure that every student has the tools to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. The Counselor will focus on promoting a safe, nurturing Christian school environment aligned with the school’s vision, mission, values, and beliefs.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Student Support and Counseling:

  • Provide individual and group counseling to students addressing personal, social, and emotional issues.
  • Develop and implement programs that promote student well-being, resilience, conflict resolution, and positive peer relationships.
  • Assist students in managing challenges related to academic performance, social dynamics, and personal development.
  • Conduct crisis interventions when necessary and provide ongoing support for students experiencing emotional difficulties.
  • Provide guidance lessons to classrooms that promote healthy behaviors and relationships.

Collaboration with Teachers and Administration:

  • Collaborate with teachers to identify students who may require additional support and offer strategies to address academic or behavioral concerns.
  • Participate in Student Support Council (SSC) and coordinate with other school personnel to ensure appropriate interventions are in place for students with diverse learning and emotional needs.
  • Provide professional development to faculty on topics related to mental health, child development, and classroom strategies for supporting emotional and behavioral growth.

Parent Communication and Support:

  • Serve as a resource for parents by providing guidance on developmental, academic, and emotional issues their children may be experiencing.
  • Facilitate communication between parents, teachers, and students to address concerns and ensure a unified approach to student well-being.
  • Offer workshops, informational sessions, and resources for parents on topics such as child development, emotional regulation, and healthy relationships.

Program Development and Implementation:

  • Develop and implement school-wide programs to support social-emotional learning and character development.
  • Organize and lead group sessions or workshops for students on topics such as managing stress, building self-esteem, navigating friendships, and developing study habits.
  • Collaborate with the school leadership team to develop school-wide policies and initiatives that promote a positive and supportive school climate.

Record Keeping and Compliance:

  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records, documenting counseling sessions and interventions.
  • Ensure that the counseling program aligns with professional and legal standards, including maintaining appropriate boundaries and confidentiality.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in School Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field required.
  • Valid state certification or licensure in school counseling.
  • Preferred 3-5 years of experience as a school counselor, preferably in a lower school school setting.
  • Strong understanding of child development, mental health, and social-emotional learning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism, empathy, and discretion.
