Grounds Maintenance Supervisor

Primary Objectives:

This position reports to the Assistant Head of Operations and is a part of Whitefield Academy's Facilities and Grounds department.  The Grounds Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the care, maintenance, and improvement of all outdoor spaces on the school’s campus. This role ensures that the school grounds reflect the institution’s commitment to excellence, safety, stewardship, and Christian values. The supervisor manages all grounds staff, coordinates maintenance schedules, and ensures that the campus environment remains welcoming, functional, and aligned with the school’s mission. The supervisor will be responsible for overseeing and implementing the grounds work at Whitefield including but not limited to: the appearance of trees, shrubs, flowers and keeping the grounds free from harmful insects and plant diseases.

Responsibilities:

Leadership and Management

  • Supervise, train, and evaluate grounds maintenance staff, fostering a positive and mission-aligned team environment.
  • Develop and manage daily and long-term work schedules for grounds upkeep, seasonal needs, and special events.
  • Collaborate with school administrators, facilities directors, and event coordinators to support campus activities and operational needs.

Grounds and Facilities Maintenance

  • Oversee landscaping, lawn care, turf management, irrigation systems, tree maintenance, and general outdoor beautification.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of playgrounds, parking areas, walkways, and outdoor structures.
  • Monitor and maintain outdoor lighting, signage, fencing, and campus safety features.
  • Establish preventative maintenance plans to reduce future repair needs and extend the life of campus assets.
  • Oversee the general maintenance of all utility vehicles, golf carts, and landscape equipment on campus.
  • Work overtime as needed to support athletics for all sporting events and assist with driving the shuttle bus to transport visitors to the stadium.
  • Support Ellsworth with all events that requires all hands-on deck.
  • Communicate with Brightview landscape services to help better the appearance of the campus.
  • Partner with OLM on monthly inspections and work with Brightview on campus landscaping

 Resource Management

  • Manage department budgets, equipment inventory, and supply procurement in a cost-effective and responsible manner.
  • Ensure maintenance equipment is properly serviced, safe, and reliable.
  • Work with vendors and contractors when specialized services or equipment are required.

 Safety and Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations related to grounds maintenance, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Promote safe working practices and ensure staff follow all safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Respond promptly to weather-related issues, emergencies, and events that impact campus operations.

Other

  • Support the mission and spiritual environment of the school through service-oriented campus stewardship.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to students, families, faculty, and visitors.
  • Other duties as requested by administration

 Hours

  • 7am-3pm Monday-Friday and some Saturdays (school year)
  • 7am-5pm Monday- Thursday or Tuesday-Friday (summer only)
  • May need to work late during special or sporting events

Professional and Personal Attributes, Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Proven experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or facilities management (5+ years preferred).
  • Experience in grounds management for a school campus or similar institution preferred.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Knowledge of horticulture, turf management, irrigation systems, and grounds equipment.
  • Certifications in landscaping, pesticide application, turf management or related fields preferred.
  • Experience with budget management and vendor coordination preferred.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient with operating grounds keeping equipment such as tractors, walk behind or push mowers.
  • Basic computer skill set (Microsoft Outlook, Word, basic Excel, email).
  • Have a valid Georgia driver's license.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts; ability to work as an effective team member.

Work for this position will primarily take place in the campus buildings and grounds in varying weather conditions. The physical demands of this position include lifting up to 50 pounds often; carrying up to 50 pounds often; sitting, crouching, and crawling intermittently; kneeling regularly; pushing/pulling, climbing/balancing, reaching, walking, standing, bending, and stooping often. To perform this job the person must be able to talk, hear, stand, sit, and/or walk for extended periods of time; must possess normal manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; must be able to operate grounds maintenance equipment (including but not limited to: mowers, weed eaters, motorized carts, and trucks); must be able to operate building and grounds maintenance equipment (including but not limited to: power tools, repair equipment, cleaning equipment, motorized carts, and trucks). Conditions may exist that create exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
