POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Dean of Curriculum & Instruction works directly with division principals, department chairs, subject matter specialists, teacher assistants, substitutes, the curriculum manager, and teachers to oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school’s curriculum, Grades K–12. Additionally, they support achieving and maintaining standards of excellence in teaching assigned curricular areas to improve student learning opportunities. Fundamental to achieving excellence in the classroom is ensuring that academic support services and student accommodations are coordinated effectively and align with overall curricular goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational & Professional

  • Master’s degree (or higher) in education or an education-related field from an accredited university
  • Minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience in a K–12 setting
  • Previous experience as an educational administrator preferred
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills of a master teacher
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, emphasizing presentation skills, interpersonal rapport, and confidence in communication with the full constituency of the organization (including board, faculty, students, parents, coworkers, volunteers, and community contacts). Uses acceptable English and speaks with articulation
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • Demonstrates leadership and organizational skills; able to manage and motivate others
  • Committed to professional development, keeping current with accepted ideas, methods, and practices in education
  • Aware of and open to new trends in education while staying grounded in school objectives and the Christian worldview

RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

Essential Functions

The Dean of Curriculum & Instruction assists the Office of the Head of School (OHS) in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the total school curriculum by:

  • Attending pertinent meetings to brief members of the OHS and provide recommendations for the overall program
  • Working with the Assistant Head of School for Academics (AHA) in applying for and allocating Title II funds
  • Working directly under the AHA to ensure curriculum and instruction align with the school mission and objectives
  • Meeting regularly with the AHA to report and advise on all matters pertaining to curriculum and instruction
  • Coordinate with OHS regarding K–12 carpool and lunchroom assignments based on staffing and needs
  • Having a broad knowledge of a wide variety of K–12 curricula
  • Recommending to the AHA the addition of new courses, grade placement, credit allowance, and graduation requirements
  • Assisting in the implementation of the curriculum; this includes analyzing teaching, ordering, and monitoring the effectiveness curriculum
  • Adhering to the established schedule for the regular review and evaluation of curriculum as well as scope and sequence documents
  • Assist AHA with planning and delivery of the annual PD conference. Recommending teacher attendance at conferences and participation in other professional growth activities
  • Being a leader in faculty professional development, recruiting and cultivating teachers to lead professional development sessions amongst their peers throughout the year.
  • Assisting in coordinating school-wide standardized K–12 testing
  • Ensuring innovation is in alignment with course scope and sequence documents
  • Analyzing data on student and school performance; guiding members of the school community in effectively using the data to inform instruction
  • Attending a variety of division-related meetings to advise, inform, report, and guide constituents
  • Assisting in the preparation and maintenance of accreditation documentation and standards relating to curriculum and instruction
  • Providing information and documents as needed for board meetings
  • Oversee Teacher Assistant Coordinator in hiring and providing direction of needs within LS and US classes, duties, and student needs
  • Oversee the Substitute Coordinator and be directly responsible for interviewing, hiring, and ensuring consistency of training for all K–12 substitutes
  • Provides support to LS and US Principals in achieving and maintaining standards of excellence in classroom instruction by:
  • Visiting classrooms often to observe classroom instruction
  • Providing feedback to division principals regarding classroom instruction and teacher effectiveness
  • Providing feedback to teachers through formative evaluation and informal interaction
  • Contributing to the development of summative evaluations, making recommendations regarding the retention of faculty
  • Mentoring and leading faculty in their professional development
  • Modeling excellence in their classroom
  • Identifying teacher needs and contributing to the development of school-wide and division-level professional development opportunities
  • Assisting division principals and department chairs in the development and review of course scope and sequence documents
  • Participating in grade-level and departmental meetings to effect horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional program of the school
  • Advising division principals regarding the allocation of curricular funds
  • Participating in the selection of textbooks and instructional materials
  • Securing and making available to the staff samples of various instructional materials, textbooks, and curriculum guides
  • Participating in recruitment opportunities to discuss curriculum and facilitate meeting enrollment goals
  • Presenting information at parent and faculty meetings
  • Keeping abreast of and interpreting to the staff the current research in relevant areas of curriculum development, teaching, and learning
  • Delivering fair and accurate feedback in a way that maximizes the chance of improvement and cultivates esprit de corps
  • Assisting the division principal in providing support for struggling faculty
  • Providing teachers with resources, suggestions, recommendations, ideas, and innovations that contribute to the improvement of classroom instruction, management, and student success
  • Working as a resource for teachers to identify which knowledge, skills, and concepts are essential to the complete educational development of students
  • Helping teachers develop a commitment to improvement
  • Seeking out resources to support the effective implementation and use of the curriculum
  • Acknowledging, encouraging, and rewarding excellence in instruction
  • Knowing highly effective ways to teach standards in all subject areas and communicating knowledge to teachers
  • Proactively developing relationships with parents/guardians to establish goodwill and shared vision
  • Assisting in the recruitment, screening, hiring, training, and assigning of instructional personnel
  • Maintaining a curriculum reference library for the use of the staff and collaborating with principals and teachers to develop a common file of community resources to enhance the instructional program

    Supplemental Functions

  • All other duties as assigned by the Office of the Head of School
  • Additional functions and responsibilities will be detailed in the Annual Goals and Supplemental Responsibilities form to be completed annually

    EVALUATION

    The Dean of Curriculum and Instruction will be evaluated annually by the AHA and will strive to carry out duties with excellence by:

  • Answering email and phone messages promptly
  • Completing and submitting reports promptly
  • Participating in professional development opportunities on an annual basis to improve personal usefulness
  • Traveling to conferences and seminars when necessary
  • Attending recruitment fairs when necessary
  • Presenting self well to the Trinity community in dress, language, and manner
