JOB DESCRIPTION.
Second Baptist School is seeking a full-time DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS for the 2025-2026 school year.
- Position Title: Director of Athletics
- Reports To: Head of School
- Work Calendar: Eleven Month
- Campus Location: Woodway Campus
JOB SUMMARY.
The director of athletics at Second Baptist School (SBS) provides visionary leadership, strategic direction and oversight for the school's athletic program. Charged with fostering a Christ-centered culture of excellence, this individual ensures that athletics serve as an extension of the school's mission—developing students academically, spiritually and athletically. The director of athletics works closely with administrators, coaches, student-athletes, parents and the broader school community to cultivate a championship mindset built on integrity, discipline and Christian character.
The Department of Athletics at SBS exists to provide an environment of competition, cooperation and teamwork that glorifies God and instills valuable life lessons. While winning is important, the true measure of success lies in the character, resilience and discipline developed through competition.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES.
Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to:
Leadership & Vision
- Implement a comprehensive 7th - 12th grade athletic program that aligns with the mission and core values of SBS.
- Provide strategic direction for athletic programs, emphasizing character development, sportsmanship and spiritual growth.
- Inspire a culture of teamwork, leadership and excellence among student-athletes and coaches.
Program Management & Development
- Oversee all aspects of SBS athletics, including varsity, junior varsity and middle school sports and PE.
- Recruit, develop and evaluate athletic staff and coaches to ensure alignment with the school's mission and coaching philosophy.
- Ensure compliance with Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) regulations and other governing bodies.
- Maintain high standards for athletic facilities, equipment and safety protocols.
- Work with academic leadership to support student-athlete academic success and eligibility.
Community & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary representative of the athletic department, effectively communicating with students, parents, faculty and alumni.
- Build relationships with student Athletics Fellows, mentoring and discipling them within the athletic community.
- Engage with the broader Houston community to enhance the reach of SBS athletics.
Operations & Budget Management
- Develop and manage the athletic department budget with financial responsibility and transparency.
- Partner with the Office of Advancement to support fundraising, sponsorships and facility enhancements.
- Oversee scheduling, travel logistics and event coordination to ensure efficiency and excellence.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Supervise and lead two assistant athletic directors, middle school director of athletics, director of strength performance, varsity head coaches and the administrative assistant to the director of athletics.
- Serve as a contributing and active member of the Woodway leadership, academic, and administrative teams.
- Maintain the athletic calendar, ensuring coordination with school and organizational events.
- Oversee score reporting and manage relationships with local and national media.
- Maintain records and results for all SBS teams, updating historical stats and the annual “By The Numbers” document.
CANDIDATE SUMMARY.
We seek the following in qualified candidates:
- A committed Christian who demonstrates a strong faith and is actively involved in Second Baptist Church.
- Bachelor's degree required. Master’s degree preferred in athletic administration, education or a related field.
- Minimum of five years of leadership experience in athletics, preferably within a private Christian school or collegiate setting.
- Strong leadership, communication and organizational skills with a passion for student-athlete development.
- In-depth knowledge of TAPPS policies, athletic program development and sports administration.
- Ability to lead and inspire coaches and student-athletes to pursue excellence in all areas.
- A strong Christian testimony and a calling to serve as a positive Christian role model to students.
- A commitment to providing exceptional customer service to all members of the community.
- A desire to lead and support all school-wide initiatives.
- Proficiency in technology with a working knowledge of Google Workspace.
- A responsible steward of the school’s resources and a personal commitment to supporting the school’s fundraising efforts.
Preferred Experience
- Three or more years of coaching, significant playing experience and athletic administration.
- An advanced degree, independent school teaching, and prior knowledge of Second Baptist Church and School are considered a plus.

Ideal candidates should have at least three or more years of coaching, significant playing and athletic administration experience.
