Position Title: Middle School Counselor
Reports To: Head of Middle School
Status: Full-Time
Work Schedule: M-F (7:30AM-4:00PM)
Position Purpose:
The Middle School Counselor serves as a vital support for students in grades 5–8, helping them grow spiritually, emotionally, socially, and academically in alignment with the school’s mission. This role involves direct student support, teacher and parent collaboration, and the development of programs that nurture a Christ-centered school culture of empathy, integrity, and resilience.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Support:
- Provide individual and small group counseling focused on social and emotional development.
- Support students experiencing challenges such as anxiety, peer conflicts, grief, or family changes while integrating biblical principles of hope and grace.
- Guide students in understanding personal strengths, decision-making, and healthy coping skills.
- Assist students with conflict resolution, self-regulation, and building healthy relationships.
- Refer students to external counseling services or specialists when needed and maintain communication with families.
Academic Support & Guidance:
- Collaborate with teachers to identify students needing academic or emotional support.
- Support students in developing study skills, time management, and goal setting.
- Assist with planning student schedules, class placements, and transitions from Lower School to Middle School and from Middle School to High School.
Parent and Teacher Collaboration:
- Serve as a resource for parents on adolescent development, parenting strategies, and mental health topics.
- Provide consultation and support to teachers regarding student concerns and social-emotional learning.
- Facilitate parent meetings and communicate regularly regarding student progress or concerns.
Program Development & Leadership:
- Develop and lead character education lessons and small groups that align with biblical values and the school’s mission.
- Plan and implement guidance curriculum addressing topics like identity in Christ, emotional regulation, peer relationships, digital citizenship, and leadership.
- Organize workshops or parent education events on adolescent issues, faith integration, and mental health awareness.
- Participate in chapel, school events, and retreats as a counseling presence and resource.
Administrative & Professional Duties:
- Maintain confidential counseling records in accordance with legal and ethical guidelines.
- Serve on student support teams to collaborate on intervention plans for students of concern.
- Stay current with best practices in Christian counseling, child/adolescent development, and school counseling.
- Attend professional development and training opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Psychology, or a related field.
- Licensed or certified in school counseling (or eligible).
- Experience working with middle school students in a school or counseling setting.
- Strong personal Christian faith and the ability to integrate biblical principles into counseling and teaching.
- Knowledge of adolescent development, mental health issues, and counseling techniques.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Commitment to the mission and values of a Christian private school environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with SEL programs or Christian character education.
- Training in play therapy, CBT, solution-focused counseling, or other evidence-based approaches.
- Familiarity with collaborative consultation models and student support plans.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- The ideal candidate can:
- Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
- Work in standard office conditions and climate.
- Work in varied extreme outside weather conditions during special activities and fundraising events, as needed.
- Perform in a highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
- Sit and stand for extended periods of time; bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
- Hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone.
