Library Media Specialist- Secondary
FullTime, Exempt
Reports to: High School Principal
Education/Experience Required/Preferred: A four-year degree is required. Master’s Degree in field Library Science is preferred.

Salary Range: $45,000 - $60,000 (The salary is the expected range and is dependent on candidate qualifications.)

 

General Responsibilities 

Provide a welcoming, vibrant learning environment that nurtures passion for inquiry, inspires creative and critical thinking, and instructs and supports students and teachers in the effective and ethical use of information and ideas.  Applicants should be comfortable with online learning platforms and possess the ability to assist students in distance learning applications.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Foster inquiry and curiosity by providing access to current print and digital learning materials
  • Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and skillful researchers.
  • Create a culture of library use through a friendly, active, and reflective space that is conducive to student learning
  • Promote excellence in scholarship through instruction in information, digital, and media literacy skills
  • Support student social and emotional wellness by providing resources and collaborating with campus counselors, learning specialists, and diversity coordinator 
  • Promote leading-edge learning experiences by supporting technology and innovation
  • Build relationships with students, teachers, and parents by promoting library services and resources through campus publications and community events
  • Instruct students and staff in effective use of the media center, information and technology literacy skills, and use of equipment
  • Evaluate, select and procure print and digital resources
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation, services, and facility use for a 21st century school library media program
  • Establish annual and long-term measurable goals for the school library media program that are aligned with the school mission and objectives
  • Actively promote reading, information literacy skills, and information resource use through activities including book clubs, reading programs, reading initiatives, and other special events
  • Cooperate and network with other libraries, librarians, and organizations to provide expanded access to resources for students and teachers
  • Work with Academic Life in the distribution, collection, and repair of textbooks
  • National Honor Society “NHS” Advisor (additional stipend)

 

Professional Responsibilities and Duties

  • Be accessible to students as a “1:5 adult,” providing academic support, active listening, and advocacy, while observing appropriate boundaries
  • Participate in department and school meetings, parent meetings, and evening events as assigned by the administration
  • Is willingly involved in the VCS community outside of school hours
  • Continue to grow as a professional by attending in-service professional development activities
  • Faithfully completes reasonable extra duty assignments (supervision, mentoring, office hours, etc.)
  • Executes all duties in a timely manner (holds class on time, meets deadlines, attends meetings on time, etc.)
  • Maintains a ‘team player’ attitude and willingly collaborates with colleagues and departmental teams
  • Maintains cordial, professional relationships with all students, staff, parents, and community members
  • Attends class overnight trips, as assigned by administration
  • Abides by the spirit and policies in the VCS Employee Handbook

 

Spiritual Commitment and Growth

  • Has a dynamic, growing faith and is a spiritual role model for students
  • Maintains a commitment to the school’s Statement of Faith in action and belief

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times
  • Must be able to traverse school facility and lead students to safety in the event of an emergency

Qualifications

Village Christian School seeks to hire only employees with a vibrant Christian faith.  Successful candidates will possess:

  • Preferred education: BA/BS
  • Experience with instruction on information and technology literacy skills, including the research process
  • Experience in evaluating and selecting print and digital resources
  • Experience in budget management, leadership, and organizational skills

 

This is a full-time, 40 hours a week, 11 month position and reports to the High School Principal. Employees are expected to fully comply with the above job description.  Additional duties may be assigned to this position as required.
